TECHNOLOGY IN EDUCATION

Background

My name is Jennifer Golochowicz and I am a senior at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan.  I am pursuing a Bachelor's Degree in Special Education-Mentally Impaired.

I taught this unit in a general education 5th grade classroom in the Warren Consolidated School District during the Fall 2000 semester.  Although it was not an urban area, I had a great deal of ethnic diversity in my classroom.  Several of my students were recent immigrants with limited English proficiency.  About 10% of my students had special needs and received services through the special education department.

The school where I taught was rated #1 in the district for use of technology.  The students had access to a wide variety of computer programs such as Kid Pix and Math Blasters, as well as use of the Internet (with certain restrictions).  Not only was I able to demonstrate something on the computer by displaying it on our television monitor, but the school had a wonderful computer lab with enough computers for each of my students to have their own.  Although this classroom contained a wide range of learning abilities, I felt that every one of my students enjoyed, understood, and benefited from the use of technology in my unit.
