Social Studies - People or Events

The following is a list of influential people or events that can be tied into general social studies curriculum, and may also incorporate LGBTQ inclusive instruction. These people or events are tied into LGBTQ curriculum because they are LGBTQ in orientation, or have influenced modern thought on the inclusion of such minorities. This list is just a beginning.

Michel Foucault - eminent gay 20th c. philosopher & sociologist focusing on human nature
Sir Francis Bacon
-gay 17th c. philosopher of science, and developer of scientific method
Harvey Milk - gay US politician & civil rights pioneer throughout late 1900s
Baynard Rustin - openly gay 1960s civil rights organizer with MLK Jr.
Peter the Great - gay 17th & 18th c. Russian tzar known for intense military code
King James I - gay 17th c. ruler of England, openly courted several male lovers
Katherine Lee Bates - early 20th c. queer author of "America the Beautiful"
Barbara Jordan - influential 1970s queer Congresswoman
Alexander Hamilton - bi-sexual author & American founding father
Stonewall Riots - start of GLBTQ civil rights movement in NYC (1969)
Breaking the Silence Campaign - Amnesty International crusade to end intolerance suffered by LGBTQ people
