Bachelor of Science in Art Education

Leading to Grades K - 12 Endorsement

The program in art education is designed to provide undergraduates and post-degree students with learning experiences that will enable them to become successful artist-teachers. This curriculum leads to a bachelor's degree and a Michigan Provisional Teaching Certificate which enables the holder to teach art in all grades, kindergarten through grade twelve, and subjects for which the holder has minor certification, in grades seven through twelve.

Students are encouraged to enter the art education program as freshmen. Undergraduates, however, may be admitted at any time during the course of their baccalaureate studies. Those who have received a bachelor's degree with an art major can enter the program as post-degree students and generally complete the professional education and art education requirements for certification in two years (more "info"click here). The sequence begins in the fall semester.

Art Therapy Concentration

There are two different options for professional preparation in art therapy at Wayne State University. Our traditional Art Therapy Program is 45 credits. Students completing this program earn a master’s degree in education (M.Ed.) majoring in Art Education with an Art Therapy Variant. This degree does not prepare students to teach (although some students may have previously completed the requirements for teacher certification). This option has been Approved by the American Art Therapy Association since 1994.

The second option is a Master of Arts (MA) in Community Counseling with Art Therapy Specialization. This option prepares students as counselor/art therapists who are eligible to earn both counseling (LPC) and art therapy (A.T.R.) professional credentials following graduation. Students interested in this option should apply directly to the Counseling Program in the College of Education. (Your application materials will be forwarded to the Art Therapy Program from Counseling.)

It is also possible for students to complete art therapy requirements with teacher certification requirements. Students interested in doing this should schedule an appointment with Dr. Holly Feen by calling 313-577-0902.

Students must also apply for admission to the University by contacting the Office of Graduate Admissions, Wayne State University, Detroit, MI 48202, or from wayne.edu.
