David J. Whitin is a Professor of Elementary Education. Prior to coming to Wayne State he taught at Queens College in New York City and the University of South Carolina. He was also an elementary school teacher for nine years in Lebanon, NH and an elementary school principal for two years in the Sturbridge, MA area.

His research interests include: the interdisciplinary connections between literature and mathematics; the role of writing as a means of expressing one's mathematical understanding; the norms of classroom discourse that support a collaborative mathematical community; and the application of mathematical concepts into a variety of scientific contexts.
